The traditional method of producing shea butter (by hand according to an ancient process) preserves its therapeutic and nourishing properties. In Europe techniques have been developed for producing refined and ultra-refined shea butter using high-temperature refining processes involving solvents. This results in a product which is almost white and virtually odourless. However, this processing method not only deprives shea butter of many of its therapeutic qualities, it also contributes to the impoverishment of the shea-producing region as buying seeds instead of finished shea butter reduces the income of local communities. The shea butter used in our products is purchased directly as a finished product from its producers in West Africa.
