Shea butter is made from the seeds of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa, formerly Butyrospermum parkii) which grows wild in the African Sahel. The trees can reach up to 20 m in height with trunk diameters of up to 1 m, producing their first fruit after 25 years and reaching full fruit-bearing capacity at 40-50 years (they have a lifespan of 300 years). The fruit of the shea tree is edible and resembles a large plum (3-6 cm). Each fruit contains 1-3 seeds which are covered in a thin, glossy casing. A single young tree bearing fruit once a year only provides around 1 kg of shea butter from each harvest. |
